Kruger National Park
Situated deep in the South African Lowveld the world distinguished Kruger National Park offers a wildlife experience that ranks with the best in Africa. Established in 1898 to protect the wildlife of the South African Lowveld, this national wildlife sanctuary of nearly 2 million hectares is unrivalled in the diversity of its life forms and a world leader in advanced environmental management techniques and policies.
Truly the flagship of the South African national parks, Kruger is home to an impressive number of species: 336 trees, 49 fish, 34 amphibians, 114 reptiles, 507 birds and 147 mammals. Man's interaction with the Lowveld environment over many centuries - from bushman rock paintings to majestic archaeological sites like Masorini and Thulamela - is very evident in the Kruger National Park. These treasures represent the cultures, persons and events that played a role in the history of the Kruger National Park and are conserved along with the park's natural assets.
Kruger National Park Demographic
Eco Systems
Ecosystems within the Kruger Park are highly varied. Six rivers feed the park - an area that encompasses an astonishing 16 vegetation zones including 1980 plant species and 300 tree species.
Seasons
The best time for observing wildlife in Kruger National Park is the dry winter season. During this safari season, the grass is low, the bushes and trees are fairly bare, and one can have an unobstructed view of the surrounding area.
Towards the end of November and early December, Kruger National Park is filled with newborns. Spotting wildlife with their young is a memorable Kruger Park safari experience.
Autumn is probably the most difficult time of the year to spot game in Kruger National Park because the grass is dense and high. Birding is usually excellent during autumn in Kruger Park.
Getting Around
The park has an extensive network of sealed roads and comfortable camps, but if you prefer leave the city slicker behind, there are also 4WD tracks, mountain bike trails and hiking trails. Even when you stick to the tarmac, the sounds and scents of the bush are never more than a few metres away.
Precautions
Malaria areas - minimize mosquito bites by wearing light, long sleeved clothing and using effective insect repellents on exposed skin. Sleep under treated mosquito netting or ensure that the doors and windows of your accommodation are screened against mosquitoes. Having a fan or air-conditioner on at night will further suppress mosquito activity.

Kruger National Park Weather
Winter season in the Kruger Park is quite dry and rain is scarce - this forces the animals to gather at the waterholes in the mornings and evenings. The days are mild, and the nights are mostly cool, but can become quite cold at times.
Summer is the rainy season in Kruger Park and the rains fill the rivers and waterholes, and the bushveld is lush and green. Vegetation is more dense in summer making it harder to locate and observe wildlife, however many people prefer to visit the Kruger this time of year.
The Kruger National Park is situated in the Lowveld, where summer temperatures can climb above 40 degrees. Rainfall in the Lowveld averages 800 mm per annum, and falls mainly during the summer months which results in humid, sultry weather. The rainy season usually starts in September and can last until May.
