Tour Overview
For those hikers who know the rigours of the Otter Trail, and for those who have never had the luck or the courage to hike it, the DOLPHIN TRAIL brings good news. For two magical days one can now hike the magnificent Tsitsikamma Coast with no heavy backpack, and spend three nights in comfort at different luxury venues! This has been made possible by the formation of a partnership between South African National Parks and two private sector partners, resulting in a unique hiking experience.
Hikers have stunning views of the rugged Tsitsikamma coastline, and the chances of spotting whales, dolphins and the occasional otter are good. On route, many birds including the gorgeous Knysna Loerie can be heard and spotted while hiking through the forest, and the endangered Oystercatcher is often to be seen on the shoreline. Swimming in the rock pools is possible at the discretion of the guides.

Tsitsikamma National Park
The Tsitsikamma National Park is situated at the heart of the picturesque Garden Route. In this extroadinary national gem, 80 km of rocky coastline boasting spectacular sea and landscapes meets a lush mountainous region with Fynbos covered valleys, and high forests with deep river gorges leading down to the sea. From the spectacular cliffs along this stretch of coast, some of the best dolphin and whale-watching in South Africa can be found.
Tsitsikamma Park is also home to a number of cultural heritages sites such as Khoisan caves, shell middens and rock art, small fishing settlements, abandoned forestry operations of days-gone-by, and grave sites. This adds an interesting twist and various stunning hiking trails are on offer.
Look out for:
- Dolphins and porpoises – keeping vigil on the ocean will produce sightings of schools of dolphins and porpoises frolicking in the waves.
- African Black Oystercatcher – this red data species is one of South Africa’s most threatened bird species. Several pairs nest along the park’s rocky coastline.
- Knysna Lourie – these beautiful birds with a gruff call are common in the forest.
- Cape Clawless Otter – the source of the name of the Otter Trail, this shy and elusive species hunts crabs along the park’s coastline and rivers alike.
- Blue Duiker – this miniature antelope is found in the forests.
